The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Wednesday reported 2,988 cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, along with 3,658 recoveries.

This brings the total cases in the country to 221,754 and total recoveries to 199,178.


Five deaths have also been announced in the country as a result of the illness, bringing the total number of deaths to 694 in the UAE and there are 21,882 active cases in the country at this point in time.

Close to 22 million Covid-19 tests have been carried out in the UAE so far.


The UAE is now second after Israel when it comes to vaccine administration rates, according to Our World in Data, a website that tracks vaccination rates run by researchers at the University of Oxford.

The data updated on January 5 shows that the UAE has administered 8.35 doses per 100 people.

A massive campaign is underway across the seven emirates, with vaccines available at public and private hospitals, health centres and even a community association in Ajman.

Plans are afoot to vaccinate 50 per cent of the population by the end of March.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi-based healthcare facility G42 Healthcare on Wednesday announced that it has identified the 'genomic source' of the Covid-19 pandemic in a successful study.
