Emirates to resume Baghdad flights on Sept 17

Dubai - The airline will operate with four weekly flights to Baghdad, served by an A330-200 aircraft in a three-class configuration.

Emirates on Tuesday said it will resume passenger flights to Baghdad from September 17 as the security situation improves in Iraq.

"After conducting an exhaustive safety and security review, we have decided to restart services between Dubai and Baghdad. Commercial air transport has been one of the cornerstones of economic development for Iraq and we want to continue to support the development of economic opportunities in Baghdad," Shaikh Majid Al Mualla, divisional senior vice-president for commercial operations - centre at Emirates, said.
"Iraq represents a flight risk, but resuming services to the capital Baghdad by Emirates after many months brings back much needed confidence for passengers and businesses," Saj Ahmad, chief analyst at London-based StrategicAero Research, told Khaleej Times.
Emirates suspended flights to Iraq eight months ago after bullets hit an aircraft operated by budget carrier flydubai as it was landing at Baghdad airport.
At least seven airlines suspended flights to Baghdad after the shooting but while most resumed operations within days Emirates did not. Emirates resuming services leaves Etihad Airways, as the only carrier still not flying to Baghdad.
