Etihad Airways will spend US$2.8 billion to power the airlines’ 26 Airbus A321neo aircraft, which are scheduled to begin delivery in 2018, the company announced in a statement today.

The United Arab Emirates’ national airline selected CFM International’s advanced LEAP engine and signed a 15-year service contract with the company, the world's leading supplier of commercial aircraft engines. The agreement will guarantee maintenance costs on a dollar per engine flight hour basis.

President and chief executive officer of Etihad Airways James Hogan said the advanced LEAP engine will contribute important operational improvements to the new A321neo fleet, such as lower fuel burn, lower noise and 15 per cent less emissions.

President and CEO of CFM International Jean-Paul Ebanga said his company was happy to welcome Etihad as a customer.

'In just 10 years, this airline has built a reputation for excellence in every facet of its business, and we are honored to become part of this team,' he said.

The deal comes a day after Etihad inked deals worth over $52 billion with Boeing and Airbus on the first day of the Dubai Airshow yesterday.

Etihad had yesterday announced an order for 56 wide-body airplanes to Boeing with options and purchase rights for an additional 26 aeroplanes.

The carrier also announced an order for 87 Airbus aircraft, plus purchase rights for a further 30, to support the global expansion of its operations.
