Egyptian cinematographer Dr Maher Rady was chosen for the Arts award.

Dr Maslouh’s work “Translation Theory and Contemporary Trends…” was chosen as the Best Translated Work.

“This valuable work adds a new prospect in translation interpretation by investigating the correlation between comparative literature and linguistics, an approach that was studied in the western academic world three decades ago, but lacked attention in the Arab universities,” said Rashed Al Oraimi, secretary-seneral of Shaikh Zayed Book Award.

“The book provides the reader with an insight into the nature of translation, language and communication across cultures.

The Arts prize for Dr Maher Rady was for the book titled ‘Thought of Light’, which is considered a breakthrough in arts because “the text addresses a subject of utmost importance and serves as a significant element in the area of cinematography. It offers a unique and distinctive value to both the camera and elements of the scene.”

The artist-writer, through use of light, went far beyond basic exposure and into the essence of visual storytelling, contributing considerably to the emotional response of the audience watching motion pictures.

The artist highlights how control of light quality, colour, direction and intensity is a major factor in the art and science of cinematography.

Shaikh Zayed Books Award, established in 2006, consists of nine categories. The awards ceremony will take place on March 18, 2009 at the Emirates Palace during the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.
