The incident happened around 12.15pm when the five teenagers of various nationalities, including the two Sudanese boys, went to swim in a risky area which is known for its high currents, police said.

First Lieutenant Hassan Al Holly of Sharjah Police said the rescue team mounted a search and recovery mission immediately after receiving information and found the body of Mohammed Taqi trapped in a rough, rocky, coastal stretch about 500 metres from where the boys had gone swimming. The body was sent for autopsy. Fourteen-year-old Ali Baqir saved by the rescue team was detained for questioning.

Al Holly urged beach-goers to take necessary precautions and ensure that the swimming area is safe. They should also follow the signboards placed all along the beach indicating the safe and dangerous swimming areas.
