Undertaken by EET, the project involves excavation of approximately 7 million cubic metres of landfill waste, and is being carried out in cooperation with Sharjah Municipality.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Tania Afram, EET’s chief commercial officer, said the remediation project work was due for completion by December, 2008.

Upon completion, the project will increase Sharjah’s suitable land area and allow developers to construct shopping malls, hospitals, hotels and residential complexes etc. as well as for building roads and new highways.

Dr Salah Al Haj, director general of Sharjah Municipality, said the municipality’s role in the project was to ensure that the remediation work does not affect the environment.
