Addressing a Press conference, Col Shaikh Sultan Al Nuaimi, Deputy Director of Ajman Police, said that 2,000 helmets and phosphoric jackets will be distributed among bicycle riders during the two-week campaign by Police patrols in various parts of the city.
“Most of the bicycle riders are from Asian countries, who have different culture. So the awareness campaign would spread safety culture among them in order to reduce accidents involving bicycle riders,” said Col Shaikh Al Nuaimi. He added that the number of bicycle riders has increased in the city following the increase in investment projects in the emirate, particularly the new Chinese market.
“Violation by bicycle riders caused 15 fatal accidents and 5 other accidents since the beginning of this year. Our goal is to bring this number down to zero by next year,” he said.
During the drive, police patrols will be deployed in three crowded areas, including Rashid bin Humaid intersection, the Industrial area and around the China Mall. They will distribute free helmets and phosphoric jackets, and teach the bicycle riders the importance of traffic safety to protect themselves.
The police have decided to distribute the safety equipment for cyclists as most of them cannot afford to buy those due to their low income. Publications in Chinese, Arabic, English and Urdu languages about the safety rules will be distributed among the cyclists.
Following the campaign, police would start its inspection campaign to issue violations and penalise all those who are not following the regulation. “First, we have to educate them and penalise them just to reduce the number of accidents,” he said.— afkarali@khaleejtimes.com
