Lt. Col. Khamis Isehaq, acting Director of Traffic and Patrols Department at the Abu Dhabi Police, said this is due primarily to the tough penalties slapped against law-breakers, heavy vehicle drivers in particular, some of whom were also detained for a week and the vehicles were impounded for a month. The defaulting truck drivers also had their driving licences confiscated for two months.

As part of a total plan to streamline the traffic flow in the capital, Lt. Col. Isehaq said, 90 radars have already been fixed at Abu Dhabi's various road junctions since last October to deter drivers from breaking the law.
