His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, released his latest books at the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) Under The Flag Of Occupation and fourth part of Hadeeth Al Thakira both of which appear in Arabic and English versions.
In his review of Under The Flag Of Occupation, Dr. S.D Karnik, history professor and consultant at the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies, explains the book as a well-researched historical perspective of Sharjah under the rule of the British Indian Empire between 1820 and 1866.
The book which contains nine chapters focuses on the Sharjah Port built in 1823 during the reign of Shaikh Sultan bin Aqr bin Rashid Al Qasimi who inherited the rule of Sharjah in 1803.
The book further explains how the East India Company in Bombay was supported by the British authorities to control key ports on both sides of the Gulf and one of them was the Sheikhdom of Sharjah.
Karnik also reviewed Shaikh's Memoirs from his book Hadeeth Al Thakira which covers the period of 1987 to 2004.
Karnik mentions that it was the Shaikh's promotion of Islamic culture locally and globally that attracted the attention of Unesco which awarded the Emirate of Sharjah the title, Cultural Capital of the Arab World 1998.
