Those hurt sustained minor to serious injuries, and were rushed to the hospital, a senior police official said, adding that hydraulic cutters and other equipment had to be used to free the trapped men.
"Four people have been reportedly stuck in the two vehicles, one of which was a four-wheel drive, the front of which was totally damaged," Major Abdullah Al Falahi, head of the centres sections at the civil defence department in the emirate of Umm Al Quwain, said.
A team of traffic police, ambulances, paramedics and rescue teams were rushed to the site as soon as the central operations room was alerted, he said.
"The paramedics provided first aid to the four injured people, but one of them -- the Emirati driver of the SUV car -- could not make it and died on the spot, while the others were rushed to the Sheikh Khalifa hospital for treatment and medical care."
