The number caused quite a stir at the auction hall and fetched the highest bid. The number was bought by an UAE national.

The auction included 87 distinguished numbers, including three two-digit numbers.

The auction hall echoed with cheers and shouts as the bidders held out their identification numbers time and again in order to compete among themselves. The atmosphere became electrifying as officials of the RTA, including the auctioneer, egged on the bidders to quote even higher amounts.

The officials said the total proceeds of the auction amounted to Dh28.28 million. Numbers on offer were spread over 14 categories under codes F, G and D, the nominal value of each of the codes is estimated at Dh5.2 million.

The two-digit numbers (F62, F91 and G80) blazed the competition between the bidders. The number G80 was the sales topper, followed by F91 which was sold for Dh2 million. The third in the line was F62 which fetched Dh1.96 million. The total value of the top three numbers amounted to Dh6.42 million.

While number F500 thrilled the bidders, to be finally sold for Dh960,000, the surprise of the auction was sprung by some four-digit numbers. Number F8888 sold for Dh970,000 and F5555 for Dh950,000.

Maitha bin Adai, CEO of RTA Traffic and Roads Agency, said the purpose of organising these auctions is to meet the desire of a large category of the community in acquiring distinguished numbers.

“The RTA will continue organising another auction next month. The auctions will be much improved and better presented in 2008,” she said.
