The board recently submitted the award's explanatory booklet to His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

Talking to Khaleej Times Mr Al Katami said: "The main purpose of submitting the booklet is to brief Dr Shaikh Sultan on the main objectives of the first cycle of the award, selection for which will coincide with International Volunteers Day."

The booklet highlights the main objectives and importance of the award, the categories permitted to nominate for the award, the various categories of the award, such as education, health, economy, environment, childhood and youth programmes, as well as a category for individuals who are pioneers in volunteer work. The booklet also includes instructions for filling the application form.

He added that the award was constituted under an Amiri Decree in 2001 with the aim of supporting and enhancing volunteer work in UAE and the Arab world as a whole. It is considered to be a prominent event that will educate people about the benefits of voluntary work in society.

Mr Al Katami further said that to date 2,500 copies of the booklet have been printed and distributed to local government departments, private establishments, humanitarian and welfare societies, universities and educational institutes and banks. "There are people and organisations who are devoting most of their time and efforts to do voluntary work and they seldom receive appreciation for their efforts. Through the award we want them to know that what they have done has not been in vain," Mr Al Katami said.

He further urged those who are willing to nominate their names for the award to submit their applications before October 13.
