At least nine people died and 36 were injured when a state roadways bus skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district Saturday night, police said.

The ill-fated Himachal Road Transport Corporation bus was going to Rekong Peo from Dharamsala when it fell into the gorge near Jogindernagar, some 200 km from the state capital.

The death toll could increase as most of the injured were in critical condition, a police official said.

He said most of the injured have been admitted to Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College at Tanda in Kangra district and PGI in Chandigarh.

Eyewitnesses said the driver probably lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a turn.
