The workers will evaluate the needs in India, Malaysia and Indonesia, according to Foud Ismail, the regional director of MSF, who was recently here on a short visit.

MSF will send a number of additional emergency aid workers to the calamity-hit countries over the coming days to assist in the relief operations, Ismail told Khaleej Times in an exclusive interview.

“Assessments are already underway in India, Thailand and Malaysia. Other staff are travelling to Sri Lanka and Sumatra island in Indonesia, and will be there within the next 48 hours.”

He added that the MSF's team from Jakarta expects to arrive in northern Sumatra soon. “We also have seven aid workers leaving for Indonesia from Europe today and tomorrow. The cargo flight with relief materials from Ostende should arrive in Sumatra not later than Wednesday.”

He pointed out that a team comprising seven staff members is on its way to Sri Lanka’s north-eastern coast. More emergency workers will follow in the course of the week. In Malaysia, MSF is now looking at the coastline north of Penang island. In Thailand, assessment is underway for the part of the southern coast bordering with Myanmar.

Ismail said the MSF team in India reached Chennai yesterday. They have reported that some initial aid is being provided there, but much more will be needed. “This team will travel further south soon,” he said. MSF is preparing to send around 32 tonnes of relief materials to Sumatra soon, he said.

“Since Malaria and fever will be big problems under the current situation. MSF is specifically looking at limiting the risk."
