The victim said as he drove off after withdrawing cash from an ATM machine in Industrial Area Number 9, he noticed that he was being followed by four men in another car.

Sensing trouble, he stopped his car at a mechanical spare parts shop. As he alighted from his car, the foursome who were following him screeched to a halt in a dramatic manner near his car.

Claiming to be CID officers, they asked E.K. to produce his credentials. While he showed them his ID and other documents the men then began inspecting his car. Thereafter, they went away.

After they left, E.K. discovered that the wallet containing Dh5,000 was missing from the car's front dashboard compartment. He did not notice the car registration number of the suspects but some passerby who was witness to the incident memorised the car plate number.

On his tip-off, the Al Buhairah police launched an investigation and are making efforts to bring the culprits to book.

An official from Sharjah Police confirmed the case and remarked that such incidents were on the rise not only in Sharjah but in others neighbouring emirates as well.

He admitted that Arab-looking people posing as policemen were targeting non-Arabs for cheating them.

He urged especially all Asian nationals to ask those who claim to be police officers to show their official IDs and confirm that the picture in the ID matches the holder.

They should not hesitate to inform the police and give the descriptions. The police will cooperate and immediately take necessary actions, he added.
