While no causalities were reported in the incident, the tenants, mostly from Arab and European countries, were evacuated. They had to spend several hours outside the building, and returned to their flats after the firefighting operation was completed.

Meanwhile, electricity and gas supply to the building were disconnected for several hours by the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority to minimise damages. The supply was restored yesterday morning, residents said.

The fire which started on the first floor of the building at around 9.30pm, spread to flats located up to the seventh floor, and also spread to the ground level parking area.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

According to a source at the Civil Defence, though the 22-storey building is equipped with fire protection equipment, they are not functioning, and have never been provided maintenance since the time of installation.

The firefighting operation was supervised by Brig. Gareeb Shaban, Director General of Civil Defence and Col. Mohammed Eid Al Mazloum, Director of Sharjah Police operation room.
