Three warehouses were gutted in the Sharjah Industrial Area No.11. The fire broke out around 2.00am yesterday in the two warehouses stocked with perfumes and spread rapidly to a neighbouring warehouse that was stocked with paints. No casualties were reported.

The contents of the perfumes warehouses were completely destroyed while the contents of the paints warehouse were partially destroyed in the fire.

The fire-fighting operations were supervised by Col Ghareeb Shabban, Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence, and Brig Salih Al Mutawa, Director-General of Sharjah Police. An officer from Sharjah Police said investigations were on to ascertain the cause of the fire.

The loss of property is estimated to be huge and could run over a million dirhams, he said, pointing out that the three warehouses were not abiding by safety regulations and lacked fire prevention and protection measures.

He urged all companies to abide by the safety regulations and warned them against using factory premises for housing purposes. In the second incident, fire erupted in Ajman Municipality's landfill located near the central prison in the Al Jarf district at 12.30 pm yesterday.

The landfill, including garbage and tyres, caught fire when the municipality workers were trying to get rid of some waste.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Brig Salih Al Matroushi, head of Ajman Civil Defence, said a few sparks ignited the fire which spread rapidly.

The municipality hired several trucks and sand movers to erect sand barriers to prevent the fire from spreading as the flames shot up to 20 metres and the heat could be felt in a radius of about 100 metres.

However, Civil Defence fire-fighters, with the help of Ajman Municipality's water tanks, managed to extinguish the blaze.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, an official from the Waste Section of Ajman Municipality, said the tyres had been lying dumped at the site for more than six years.
