The programme, being implemented through DWA’s Al Nahda Consultancy and Training Centre (NCTC), will provide psychological, family-related, educational and legal counselling for couples, Afraa Al Hai, Director of the NCTC, told Khaleej Times.

Statistics show that during 2002, the number of divorce cases filed before UAE’s Sharia court was 2,804 which was nearly 40 per cent more than 2,019 cases filed in 2001. The increase in the number of marriages registered during the period was only 11 per cent from 7,683 to 8,529.

Al Hai pointed out that this alarming increase required special attention of social organisations. Awareness programmes were needed to educate married couples on how to solve their disputes and to improve their family relations, she said.

Al Hai said the NCTC will adopt a scientific approach to strengthen family structure and prepare young couples for a successful marital life through maintaining good relations.

“The centre shall provide social and legal advice. Our approach is unique and and we hope to achieve performance levels beyond expectations,” she said.

The NCTC’s goals, according to Al Hai, includes developing positive awareness about family relations, attending to family disputes, decreasing the number of divorce cases in the society and strengthening the role of women by encouraging them to participate in the programmes and utilising their talents.

The management of the NCTC is planning to provide hotline consultancy on various financial and psychological problems in addition to establishing a special library of publications useful for women.

A web site to provide women information regarding family life is also on the cards, in addition to organising courses and holding awareness lectures at universities, colleges and high schools.
