Addressing a Press conference attended by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Shaikh Issam bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the Chairman of the Ruler’s office, said the Sharjah Sports City, the work on which will begin in April next year and is scheduled to be completed by 2009, is part of the emirate’s development projects in all fields.
The Sports City will be constructed on the eastern side of the road that connects the Sharjah-Dhaid Road to the Sharjah Kalba Road. “This location was selected to make the City accessible to all people from various parts of the emirate.”
He told mediapersons that the Sports City will include a golf course that will cost Dh 110 million. Besides, the sports complex will also include an Olympic swimming pool, multi-purpose sports halls, a car racecourse, karting tracks, a skating hall, a cycle racecourse, tennis courts, cricket and football stadiums and administration buildings.
A similar sports complex will also be constructed in Khorfakkan.
Shaikh Issam said the Sharjah Sport City will contribute a great deal to develop sporting activities in the country. It will also host international sports championships.
The government said four-year sports education programmes will be launched under the aegis of the University of Sharjah.
