Committee asks companies to pay striking workers

DUBAI - The Crises Committee consisting of the Labour Ministry, Dubai Police and other competent authorities has come up with a solution that will end the strike by labourers in two different firms. In a reconciliatory agreement with the representatives of the two firms and the striking workers, the committee said the firms could make the payment of the wages either through liquidating the bank guarantees deposited with the Labour Ministry or through direct payment. An official source at the Labour Ministry said that the two firms were previously referred to the Public Prosecution after they defaulted the Wage Protection System for two months.

“A settlement has been reached, whereby, bank guarantees for 360 workers who opted not to continue working with the firms, were amortised. The other 700 workers decided to continue,” added the source. The source emphasised that the Ministry was determined to protect workers’ rights.
