Addressing a Press conference at the Children's City yesterday, Mohammed Al Fardan, Chief Supervisor of Children's City and Head of Promotion and Recreation Office, announced the schedule of the summer camp - for children of 3-13 years - and over 30 activities to choose from including sport, excursions, computers, edutainment, art, live entertainment, quizzes, competitions as well as educational and recreational activities of Murshid, the Children City's mascot.

Makiya Al Hajiri, Head of Children's City Unit, and Rory McRae, organiser of the Summer Camp, were also present at the Press meet. Mr Fardan reiterated that Dubai Municipality is committed to provide highly beneficial programmes for children during the summer vacation. The camp will be conducted for nine weeks. Children can choose between weekly and monthly (4 weeks) programmes and daily programmes.

"Children will definitely benefit from these programmes and they will be able to spend their free time in an atmosphere with excellent entertainment, cultural and educational activities under the supervision of highly qualified staff." He said that this year, the Dubai Municipality has decided to conduct the camp with a variety of programmes. "The camp would pay attention to children's care such as safety, advantage and entertainment," he said.

Murshid educational activities are being introduced in the city for the first time. "These include mechanical and electrical courses and special courses in music and art. There would also be healthcare and computer courses organised by specialised companies in the field. The company will issue certificates to the children in PowerPoint, Excel, Photoshop and Word. Children up to the age of 15 would be admitted for these courses," said Mr Fardan. The children will also be trained in pottery making.

Four films will also be screened at the Planetarium. These cultural and scientific films, including "UAE Skies" and "Sandy Pepper," will deal with space and astronomy and will be screened eight times a day. Mr Fardan said that there would be story-telling sessions in which Children's City guides would read out stories to the visitors. These would be followed by competitions for children and quiz on various topics.

Explaining the concept of Murshid Daily Camp, Makiya Al Hajiri said the Children's City conducts comprehensive visit programmes daily for children in the age group of 6-12. "The visiting time for children is from 7.30am to 3.30pm and from 3.30pm to 8.30pm," she added.
