Awafi Festival Promises Grand Fare in RAK

RAS AL KHAIMAH - Awafi Festival 2010, organised by the Department of Economic Development (DED) is set to commence on January 29 and will go on until February 5 here.

The festival has over the years become a popular event that celebrates the emirate’s ethnic and cultural heritage through performances, cultural displays and interactive outdoor sports events in the Awafi desert area of Ras Al Khaimah, known for its cool environment and beautiful landscapes.

Hamad Hassan Al Shamsi, deputy director general, DED, and also the coordinator said alongside other exciting activities, this year’s event will be braced with famous sports car drivers from across the UAE and other Arab countries who will participate in the adrenaline-pumping motor sport races and adventure shows.

Die-hard biking and car-racing enthusiasts will have field days of enjoying varieties of sports bikes, sports cars and 4x4 vehicles including those with six and eight cylinders.

The events, entry for which is free, are expected to attract a large number of residents from RAK and other emirates, said Al Shamsi.

He noted that security measures have been stepped up and the police have intensified patrolling at the Awafi desert area to ensure the safety and comfort of the tourists and families who have already started camping in the area especially during the evening hours and at night to enjoy the cool temperatures.

The Department of Economic Development is also coordinating with the Ras Al Khaimah Municipality to check on the standards of the outlets and ensure the safety of food being sold in the tourist area for the forthcoming festival.

Thousands of visitors and tourists are expected to gather in the Awafi area to participate in the festival.
