Ajman — The 7th Ajman International Urban Planning Conference (AIUPC) will take place from March 2 to 4 under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, at the Culture Centre in the Al Jarf area.
The two-day conference, which is being held under the slogan ‘Planning for events city’, will host more than 200 experts, researchers and specialists in urban planning from 18 countries around the world.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Mohammed bin Omair, head of the organisation committee of the conference, said the AIUPC’s slogan reflects the fact that events have become one of the most successful tools available to cities to boost tourism and “to create powerful and memorable imaging opportunities”.
Events like the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games or the World Expo are seen as important factors in creating competition between cities in the pursuit of enhancing their image and promoting substantial urban development programmes. A prime example of this is Barcelona, which has regularly hosted international events as means of enhancing its identity and prestige and has utilised it as a trigger for urban improvement projects.
The conference will have a special focus on Ajman as a potential city of events.
