Heavy fog that had brought visibility down caused the accident, police confirmed.

First, a heavy truck crashed into another around 7am. The vehicles belonged to separate construction companies.

Two vans of contracting companies carrying workers crashed into the trucks causing serious injuries to 15.

They were followed by salon cars and small vehicles which crashed into the piled-up vehicles, injuring 11 others.

The pile-up, said the police, led to a traffic jam for over three hours in the area.

The Sharjah Police rushed to the site and blocked roads.

Officials from Sharjah police stations, civil defence and Anjad patrol team also reached the spot immediately to administer first aid to the injured and rush them to Al Qasimi and Al Kuwaiti hospitals.

Top officials of Sharjah Police have called on motorists to be extra cautious while driving during foggy conditions.
