According to media reports, two soldiers from the elite Duvdevan combat unit have been criminally charged for shooting a camel and laughing after the incident. A video documenting the killing has gone viral leading to widespread criticism.
The incident happened in the occupied Jordan Valley while the soldiers were on leave. The Duvdevan combat unit mainly operates under cover in the West Bank to check on Palestinian suspects.
The soldier in the passenger seat filmed the video as the other soldier shot at it using an army-issued handgun. One of them burst out laughing as they sped off.
The camel died as a result of the shooting.
The soldiers were arrested later by the Military Police, and their service in the elite unit was suspended.
In a statement, the army said, "This was a serious incident that does not meet the standards expected from IDF soldiers."
