The Telugu Desam Party suffered a fresh setback in Telangana on Tuesday when its legislator from the city K P Vivekananda Goud quit the party and joined the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi.
Goud, who represents Qutbullapur Assembly constituency, switched over to TRS in the presence of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao here.
He is the sixth TDP MLA from the city and the surrounding Ranga Reddy district to quit the party and join TRS ever since the latter came to power in the 2014 elections.
The defection came close on the heels of the rout faced by Telugu Desam Party in the recent elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. It managed to win just one division out of the total 150 while its ally BJP won four.
Goud sent in his resignation letter to the party president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.
Following the landslide victory of the TRS in the civic body elections, there has been widespread speculation that some more TDP MLAs would join the ruling party.
The MLA said that he joined the TRS as it was the only party which could ensure development of the state. "People are with TRS as seen in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election results. They want us to work for overall development of Telangana," the MLA said.
