Shyamvar Rai, the former driver of Indrani Mukerjea, who has been accused of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora, on Wednesday told a court here that he wanted to turn approver and disclose the truth about the crime.
The sensational murder case surfaced last August after Rai, who was arrested in an unrelated case, told the police that his former boss had murdered her daughter in April 2012.
Rai, Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna, and media baron Peter Mukerjea, her current husband, are currently in jail facing charges of murdering Sheena.
"I am aware about the acts and was a participant to Sheena's murder," Rai told the judge on Wednesday. He told the court that Sheena, then 24, was strangled to death and he was present when the crime was committed. Asked why he was confessing now, Rai said he regretted for having participated in the crime.
Indrani's former driver denied that he was turning approver under pressure. The court asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the case, to file a written reply as to whether it would accept Rai's plea to turn approver. The court also extended the judicial custody of the four persons till May 17.
Last week, Rai had written to the court informing it that he wanted to turn approver. Strangely, he was not produced before the court about two days ago for the hearing. The judge then warned officials of Thane jail - where Rai is lodged - that it would initiate contempt proceedings if the accused was not produced in court on Wednesday.
Indrani, the high-profile television executive, has been accused of murdering her daughter from a previous marriage in April 2012. Along with her former husband Sanjeev, she allegedly strangled Sheena to death in a car in Bandra; later that night, she drove to Pen on the outskirts of Mumbai, and buried her daughter's body in a forest.
Indrani allegedly murdered her daughter as she was having an affair with Rahul, Peter Mukerjea's son from an earlier marriage, and wanted to marry him. After the alleged killing, Indrani informed everyone that her daughter had decided to go to the US and did not want to return to India.
