A judicial official said Omar Bakri Mohammed was released Wednesday on $3,330 bail after two convicted militants retracted their accusations against him. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, offered no further details on why the militants changed their testimony.
Mohammed was arrested Nov. 14 in north Lebanon, two days after a military court sentenced him in absentia on charges that included belonging to a group plotting terror acts.
Mohammed returned to Lebanon in 2005 after 20 years in Britain where he headed a radical Islamic group. Britain has banned him from returning.
