He was 73 and is survived by wife Eshwari and children Ammini and Ayilyan. Born in 1940 at Brahmakulam in Trichur district, Karunakaran had shown interest in painting while studying in school.
The passion for painting took him to Government School of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, where he did diplomas in design and painting under renowned artists D.P. Roy Choudhari and K.C.S. Panikker.
After completing his studies, Karunakaran worked as art director and made ad films in Chennai. He returned to Kerala in 1970 and charge of ‘Kalapeetom’ (Kerala Institute of Arts) at Cochin. He founded the state’s private art gallery, “Chitrakoodam”. He also served Kerala Lalita Kala Academy as its head.
His works have been widely exhibited in India and abroad, including Indian Embassy in Washington.
