Pakistan and India have agreed on stopping illegal constructions, removing wild growth, maintaining boundary pillars and making continued efforts to ensure peace and tranquility on the 'working boundary' and international border.
The consensus was developed at a five-day bi-annual meeting between senior officials of the Pakistan Rangers and Border Security Force (BSF) of India at the Punjab Rangers Headquarters in Lahore from December 24 to 28, 2013.
The meeting followed the meeting between the Directors General of Military Operations of Pakistan and India earlier this week.
The 20-member Rangers delegation was headed by Pakistan Rangers Punjab Director-General Major-General Khan Tahir Javed Khan and the 13-member Indian delegation was led by BSF Director-General Shri Subhash Joshi.
The DGs held face-to-face talks after one-and-a-half years in a cordial, positive and constructive atmosphere. They showed their commitment to maintain the sanctity on the 'working boundary' as well as international border and agreed to re-energise the existing mechanisms.
A consensus was developed to utilise available communication channels more effectively to control violations at the zero line. Both sides agreed on zero tolerance for smuggling and agreed to take strict action against the smugglers as per the existing laws of the two states.
It was also agreed that inadvertent crossers would be returned immediately to their respective countries.
Both sides decided to hold regular meetings between the two border guarding forces at all levels of command to ensure maintenance of peace and tranquillity along the Working Boundary and the international border as well.
Another meeting between the two sides is scheduled to be held in the Indian capital of New Delhi during the first half of next year. -news@khaleejtimes.com
