New legislation announced in the UK on Monday could see motorists who kill others after speeding, racing or using a phone while driving could receive life sentences, according to BBC News.
Those who cause death by careless driving under the influence of drink or drugs could also be sentenced to life.
The UK's current maximum penalty for each crime is 14 years.
However, the BBC says the sentencing reforms will be introduced in Parliament next year.
The mooted law change was first announced in 2017 and the increase will be applicable in England, Scotland and Wales, but not Northern Ireland, which has separate road safety laws.
A new offence of causing serious injury due to careless driving is also under consideration.
Without that specific offence currently, drivers who cause such injuries in such a fashion can only be convicted of dangerous driving, the maximum penalty for which is a fine.
