The saffron party, which already controls the civic bodies in Gujarat’s seven other major cities, won 41 of the 60 seats in Junagadh in elections held on Sunday, the results of which were declared on Tuesday.

The Congress, which had been controlling the Junagadh civic body since 2009, could bag only 16 seats, while two seats went to Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party with a lone independent winner in the polls, the first under the leadership of a new Chief Minister, Anandi Patel, who congratulated the party leaders.

With this victory, the saffron brigade now governs Gujarat’s all eight municipal corporations. A total of 120 smaller town municipalities in the state are already under the control of the BJP which had last grabbed the important Gandhinagar civic body from the Congress. Only a couple of months ago, the BJP had won all 26 Lok Sabha seats in the state and its Chief Minister Narendra Modi is now the prime minister.

The BJP also has a commanding majority in the Gujarat legislative assembly with 117 members while the Congress has only 55 legislators.
