China to take control of port today

KARACHI - Pakistan will officially hand over the operation of Gwadar port to China Overseas Port Holding Authority (COPH) today (Monday), it was learnt.

According to official reports, a ceremony for the signing of an agreement will be held at the Presidency which will be attended by President Asif Ali Zardari and other officials.

The transition of the control from the Port of Singapore Authority International (PSA) to COPH would complete within a week after the pact was signed.

Gwadar Port is a warm-water, deep-sea port situated on the Arabian Sea in Balochistan province of Pakistan. It is located approximately 460km west of Karachi, 75km east of Pakistan’s border with Iran and 380km northeast of the nearest point in Oman across the Arabian Sea.

The harbour is owned by the state-run Gwadar Port Authority and operated by PSA (2007-2012).
