Two men and their wives were arrested in Panaji on Wednesday for allegedly locking up their sister in a room for nearly 15 years, police said.
The four persons arrested include the brothers of the victim Sunita Verlekar and their wives, who have been booked under section 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code.
"They were placed under arrest and subsequently released on bail earlier today (On Wednesday)," Superintendent of Police Karthik Kashyap told reporters in Panaji.
Sunita, who was rescued from a room of the Verlekar home in Candolim village, located around 15 km from Panaji, has been sent to a government-run shelter home.
Believed to be in her early 50s, she was rescued by official of the Women's Police Station late on Tuesday, along with members of a women's right's group, following a tip-off from an unknown person. Sunita was found in a locked dingy room without clothes on her.
