Three years ago, Uzma Farooq moved to the UAE for work. Her sister Rabiya soon joined her. Their younger brother Bilal came to the country recently and was all set to take up a job, when an agent, handling his work visa, fled with his money. Uzma too lost her job. Plagued by financial woes, the siblings and their ailing mother, Khalda Farooq, soon found themselves with no money or home. With the Covid-19 measures becoming stringent, it got increasingly difficult for them to even find a place to sit after 8pm.
Uzma said, "We were helpless and had given up. We didn't know what was in store for us. Finally, we got in touch with reporters from Khaleej Times, who made our story known to the people of the UAE on April 4, 2020. Many readers reached out to us. Now, we have a home, with the rent taken care of for a month. My mother, who was ill, is getting treatment. People have offered to pay for my brother's visa. I cannot thank KT and their reporters enough. Every day, we ask God to bless them abundantly."
