The UAE's budding gymnast Lamia Tariq Malallah clinched the bronze medal at the annual Novogorsk Winter Cup 2018 in Moscow on Friday.
The championship was organised by the President of Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation, Irina Viner. Lamia, who was the only non-Russian participant competing in the Russian National Level Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship, was able to compete after recieving special approval.
The championship brings a myriad of strong talent from all over Russia and creates an entry for the top winners to be a part of the Russian national team.
The Director of Dubai Youth Olympic School, Ksenia Dzhalaganiya, who is Lamia's coach was eager to showcase Lamia in this extremely tough competition.
Lamia, who has been shortlisted for the Mohammed bin Rashid Creative Sports Award this year, was pitted against the best of the best in the A category with 18 other strong contenders from around Russia. She held her own by competing in freehand and hoop, scoring a total of 21.850 points, and was placed third overall to seal the bronze medal, the first ever for the UAE in a Russian National level championship.
Russia's Vishnyakova Emilia with points 24.050 clinched the gold while countrymate Shagunina Daria with 23.600 points settled for the silver.
