Two men have each been sentenced to three years in jail to be followed by deportation for duping a businesswoman of Dh2.5 million.
The two Syrians, a 55-year-old uncle and 28-year-old nephew, told the Emirati woman that they were in investment business and had a contract with high profit yields, which she believed, mainly after she was shown some documents which proved to be fake later.
The Court of First Instance found both men guilty of charges of fraud and forgery. They claimed innocence during the trial. The case unfolded in 2013 and 2014.
In her statement to the public prosecution investigators, the Emirati complainant, 58, said the pair showed her some documents claiming they had a contract worth Dh29 million with a ministry in Dubai to organise an exhibition.
She believed their words and signed an agreement with them. Consequently, she paid the pair Dh2.5million as she was promised high profits.
"For my share of revenues, they had handed me two cheques, each worth Dh3 million on two occasions, but both were rejected by the bank as they had no balance."
The 55-year-old accused then convinced her not to complain against them and gave the cheques back after using other forged papers to make his claims more credible.
However, after learning from the ministry that there was no such contract to organise the said exhibition she filed a criminal complaint against the duo.
