The Court of Appeals has upheld a six-month jail term given to a 40-year-old British tourist, by a lower court, for assaulting an air hostess during a flight while drunk.
The court also upheld the defendant pay Dh1,000 as fine for consuming alcohol without a licence.
The man has been accused of assaulting and insulting a stewardess during a flight from London to Dubai in June last year.
It is believed he caused disturbance by smoking in the toilet and compromising the safety of other passengers. He is accused of threatening to chop off the air hostess' hands and kill her unless she served him more liquor.
He allegedly pulled the woman several times by her shirt and verbally abused her.
The flight attendant said in her statement during the investigation that the passenger was very drunk when he was denied more alcohol. "He threw food on the floor in an intentional and provocative way and I had to clean the mess after him," she told the prosecutor.
And instead of obeying the instruction of the crew staff, the accused went to the toilet and shortly afterwards smoked inside, setting off the alarm system
The police at the Dubai International Airport were informed and the accused was taken upon landing into custody for interrogation.
The verdict may be appealed within 30 days at the Court of Cassation.
