Ah, tipping. A custom that, at times, is similar to walking on thin ice. Sometimes, you end up giving one when it isn't expected. And sometimes you forget to give one when it is a convention to do so. It's quite easy to get confused about the when and where especially in a city like Dubai where everything from groceries to tailors can be sent to your door. While the amount depends on you, here's a rough guide to who you should tip.
Waitstaff
Sure, restaurants already include a service charge in the bill. But if you had a fabulous dining experience you could show your gratitude by tipping the waitstaff. According to Visit Dubai, tipping 10-15 percent of your bill is expected.
Bellhops and valets
It's a custom to tip hotel staff and valet drivers since they, pretty much, make or break your experience of being in Dubai. Guests normally give Dh5-10. If their luggage is heavy, they pay more.
Supermarket bag packers
We've seen some shoppers who pack their shopping in the bags at the supermarket. There are others who ask supermarket staff to bring their packed bags to their car in the parking lot. You know this is tiring since you've done it yourself before. If you're one of those that avail of the services of the bag packer, make sure you tip him/her.
Delivery driver
Ever had pizza delivered and the rider had to scrounge through his pockets because you gave him a Dh200 note and he didn't have change? That's a pretty awkward situation. If the change you are due is a small amount, why not offer it to the driver? You not only tip him in the process, you also give yourself more time to appreciate the food you just ordered because it's still warm.
Barbers/Hairstylists
Good hairstylists are easy to find in Dubai. You can easily find one that can get your hair done right. If you've been a loyal customer of a certain stylist, you can tip an amount of about Dh5 or about 10% of the bill.
