Maintenance work in full swing as RAK gears up to combat floods

Ras Al Khaimah - The department of public services, said they are gearing up to protect residents against flooding in valleys and other areas.

Maintenance and upgrade work across all roads and valleys are in full swing as the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah puts flood mitigation plans into place ahead of the rainy season.
Ahmad Al Hammadi, director-general, department of public services, said they are gearing up to protect residents against flooding in valleys and other areas.
"Jebel Jais is one of the main sites where the maintenance work is going on," he said, adding that some other roads are also undergoing upkeep and upgrade, particularly those close to the valleys of Al Beeh, Haqeel, and Sheha.
"The department is developing the rain drainage network under the RAK Bridge to ensure safe and smooth traffic flow."
Maintenance works are also underway at the Cornish Al Qawasim, Al Muaireedh area and Kuwaiti Hospital roundabout, Hammadi pointed out.
"Our teams are cleaning up and diverting the course of the water current in Naqb Valley away from the residential areas."
"This is apart from plans to develop the road of Ghalila Valley and Shaam Valley to curb the fallout of the floods on the nearby residential mountainous areas."
"The department is cleaning up the abbarat or rain small bridges and rain drainage networks across the emirate."
Hammadi said the department is enforcing strict precautionary rules to curb the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.
"Physical distancing, wearing masks and gloves, and checking temperature of employees are some of the strictly observed rules in the department."
The department is also providing 46 services online, he pointed out.
"These can be availed of via the 'Mrak' smart app," he said, noting that his department processed 8,761 transactions distantly in the first half of this year.
