The Ras Al Khaimah Public Prosecution has started interrogating Ahmed Al Shehi, the 38-year-old Emirati man charged with burning his parents to death at Julphar area on Dec 18.
Official sources said that the suspect, arrested in a record time following his crime, was taken in police custody during which investigations were initiated on his motives to kill his parents in cold blood.
Whereas some reports said the accused was mentally disordered, some others affirm that he showed that he was not remorseful for his brutal murder and his attempt to stab his younger brother to death as well.
"He was not good to us all, including his own wife, children, brothers, sisters, and of course his parents whom he used to shout and swear at," said the younger brother.
The suspect, having committed his heinous crime, fled the scene to a mountainous area, but the RAK police managed to track him down, and arrest him in a few hours, police sources said.
"The moment he entered the house, he dragged his father to the ground floor, pour petrol on him, and set him on fire," the brother added.
Though scared, the mother rushed to her son trying to stop him, but he pushed her down, and set her on fire as well, he explained. "He even stabbed me while trying to defend my parents and set the entire house on fire for no clear reason."
Brigadier Abdullah Khamis Al Hadidi, deputy chief commandant of the RAK police, said the suspect purposefully set their parents on fire. "A medical report on his mental health has been requested from the bodies concerned."
Brigadier Ghanim Ahmed Ghanim, director general of the police operations room, said the civil defence department was alerted about the fire at around 7.30am. "The 62-year-old Emirati man, who was in a critical condition, was declared dead late on Sunday."
Medical sources told Khaleej Times that the man, identified as K.A.O., could not survive the 90 to 100 per cent burns he suffered in the inferno. "The senior Emirati man was airlifted in an ambulance chopper to a hospital in Abu Dhabi, but his condition was so critical, and he could not make it."
The man's wife, who was also badly burnt due to the fire, was declared dead shortly after being rushed to the Saqr government hospital for treatment and medical care early on Sunday.
"Though the 57-year-old woman, identified as N.A., was totally burnt, she was admitted to the intensive care unit where all the specialists and consultants concerned tried hard to rescue her life, but she breathed her last," they said. "The 27-year-old son of the deceased was also injured and burnt in the fire, but his condition was stable, and he received timely treatment."
