Sharjah Police have warned against the illegal sale of firecrackers ahead of Diwali, while urging the people to cooperate and report any such violation.
Brigadier Mohammed Rashid Beyat, director-general of police operations, said that before any festival, police patrols are intensified to swoop down on those selling crackers. "In coordination with the municipality, we also crack down on firecrackers' sale online and at grocery shops."
He said that owing to intensified inspection, nowadays groceries refrain from selling firecrackers in residential areas. But some gangs sell them online and deliver the stuff at the shoppers' doorsteps.
He warned that the police will have zero tolerance against offenders who try to exploit the festival seasons to carry out illegal practices.
Brig Al Beyat said that firecrackers lit by children during festivals could cause serious injuries and lead to accidents in residential areas. It also pollutes the environment and disturbs residents, he pointed out.
He said the police need parents' support in fighting the illegal practice. "No incidents of injuries related to bursting of firecrackers have been reported this year."
"The police will also continue to visit schools to raise awareness about the dangers associated with firecrackers," he added.
