For two months starting August 4, the Ras Al Khaimah Police will launch an initiative - Fined but forgiven - under which drivers with unclear or dirty number plates will be let off without a fine and given 14 days to shape up.
As per Article 27/B of the Federal Traffic Law, a fine of Dh400 is slapped on a motorist involved in driving a car with an unclear number plate, according to Brigadier Jamal Ahmad Al Tair, director-general of the resources and assistant services.
"However, the fine shall not be entered in the traffic system, and the erring driver would be given a grace period of 14 days to amend the number plates."
The initiative 'Fined but forgiven' is in line with the RAK Police's initiatives to mark the Year of Tolerance, said Brigadier Mohammed Saeed Al Humaid, director-general of the central operations room, RAK Police.
"The move is aimed to make the roads of the emirate safer and ensure road users' safety."
Lt Col Muhammad Abdullah Al Bahhar, head of traffic investigations and control, said they are geared up to raise traffic safety awareness and curb road accidents and casualties.
"All drivers are advised to check the clarity of their vehicles' number plates before hitting the road to avoid a Dh400 fine."
The 14-day grace period, effective from the date of issuing the ticket, shall come to an end on October 4, he explained.
