A man has been accused of assaulting a woman as she prayed at a Dubai mosque.
The defendant attacked the woman after she refused to sleep with him, the Dubai Court of First Instance heard.
The attack caused her a possible permanent disability.
The 37-year-old Bangladeshi man is said to have taken the woman's number from a nearby cafeteria and offered her a job. The 43-year-old victim, a Bangladeshi homemaker, refused the job offer. Later in the day, she received a phone call from the same person who "spoke impolitely" asking her to "hang out and sleep with him in a villa".
"I refused and told him that I was an old woman. He insisted, so I hung up the phone," the woman was quoted as telling prosecutors.
Two days later, the man attacked her during her afternoon prayers at a mosque and punched her repeatedly in the face, causing her major injuries in her right eye and several facial fractures. She also sustained injuries in the chest and stomach.
A police officer told prosecutors that the accused said he took the woman's number from a nearby cafeteria after learning that she was looking for a job. The accused had said he'd been in touch with her to help her find a job. He denied assaulting her.
Medical reports showed that the victim sustained multiple facial fractures that may take up to two years to heal. Her complaints of duality of vision may indicate a 25 per cent permanent disability.
The defendant denied the charges against him when he appeared before the court.
A verdict will be pronounced on January 16.
