Sultan Abdullah Al Mualla, Director General of Sharjah Municipality, said the municipality is keen on improving the services carried out for the development and beautification of the city on an ongoing basis to keep the environment clean and free from pollution.
He added that the Municipality is taking great efforts to maintain a healthy environment to attract tourism, stressing that Sharjah has recently witnessed an increase in the number of residents.
This has prompted the municipality to promote the cleaning procedures in line with its strategy to achieve the highest standards of beauty and maintain a sustainable environment.
Al Mualla explained that the municipality plans to tighten the supervision and monitoring role of the violators of cleanliness and hygiene of the emirate. It has been recently noticed that a large number of residents and visitors are throwing trash and cigarette butts, which distorts the overall beauty of the city of Sharjah, stressing that the tightening of the supervision and regulatory measures has come under the guidance of Shaikh Sultan. Al Mualla said the municipality will strengthen the existing staff and enhance their role to implement orders. It will also increase the number of inspectors to maintain cleanliness.
“It is reported that the government is spending huge sums of money annually to maintain cleanliness, landscaping and agriculture, but residents continue to throw waste in public places. Also, people set up barbeques in non-designated areas. A large numbers of residents have been seen smoking shisha in public places and all this harms the environment,” Al Mualla said.
He pointed out that the absence of awareness among the public is the main reason for such practices. He called upon people to comply with the law and to cooperate with the municipality in maintaining the cleanliness of the city and in order to avoid fines.
He added that the municipality will carry out an awareness campaign to educate the public especially school students on the importance of cleanliness and preservation of the environment. The municipality will also coordinate with the police to take action against offenders.
Al Mualla stressed the need to exert more efforts to improve the level of tourism, investment and environment in the emirate.
