A grandmother has won the custody of her grandchildren after their mother died from an acid attack by her husband.
The Abu Dhabi Court stripped custody of the six children from their paternal grandmother and instead gave it to their maternal grandmother, after she filed a law suit demanding the right to be the children's rightful guardian.
The grandma said in her lawsuit that it was not right for the children to stay with the family of a man who killed their mother in such a heinous manner. The Emirati dad is still on trial at Abu Dhabi criminal court for murdering his wife and a verdict is yet to be issued.
Official court documents stated that the Emirati mother was attacked by her husband when she filed for divorce after discovering that the man had married another woman. The divorce was not finalised as the husband was in prison at the time for drug-related crime and bounced cheques. Upon his release in February 2016, the man went to the home of the victim - mother of six children - and confronted her accusing of adultery. The man allegedly checked his wife's phone for proof, but when he could not find anything, he poured nitric acid on her body in front of their three children.
The couple's eldest son, 15, and his younger brother were also burned by the acid while trying to rescue their mother. However, they were able to call the ambulance that took her to hospital. She suffered second and third degree burns over 70 per cent of her body. The woman was admitted to Al Mafraq hospital before being flown to Germany to be treated by a burns expert, but later succumbed to injuries.
