The police in Ajman and Sharjah have initiatives to release inmates jailed for failing to pay debts and blood money.
Brigadier Saif Al Zeri Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, said that the police support them to ensure family stability.
The Sharjah Reformatory and Punitive Establishment (SRPE) prepares a list of inmates involved in debt cases based on humanitarian circumstances and good conduct. The SRPE study the cases and nominate those who deserve the pardons during various religious and national occasions.
The Ruler of Sharjah, as part of a humanitarian gesture, has recently pardoned 180 inmates from various nationalities as part of the inmate week to be able to join their families and start new life in the New Year. A total of 20 inmates were released last week after Sharjah Charity Organisation settled their dues.
He said the police have recently settled financial cases worth Dh100,000 and two per cent of the released debtors are GCC nationals.
In 2016, the Ajman Police released 30 such inmates and the total amount settled for them was Dh9.5 million. "93 per cent of the released inmates were involved in debt cases, while seven per cent had to pay blood money," Brig Al Nuaimi added.
He said Arabs topped the list by 47 per cent, followed by Asians (30 per cent), Emiratis (13 per cent), Africans (7 per cent) and GCC nationals (3 per cent).
Generous people also donate to settle inmates' debts and help them return to their families. Brig Al Nuaimi urged banks, financial institutions, companies and charity organisations to support the move and make donations.
