From Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower, to the balconies of villas in Jumeirah; from the deserts of Hatta to the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah, UAE residents joined the rest of the world to witness the 'supermoon' spectacle on Monday night.
Viewing parties were held across the country like the one organised by Dubai Astronomy Group at Mushrif Park where telescopes were made available for budding astronomers and stargazers. The more adventurous drove to the desert for an unhindered view of the moon.
The stellar display marked the closest a full moon has been to Earth since January 1948. That means the moon appeared as much as 14 per cent bigger than the smallest moon and 30 per cent brighter than the average full moon.
As the sun went down, people started clicking photos. Social media was abuzz with images taken by residents using their smartphones or SLR cameras, making #supermoon one of the top trending Twitter posts. One KT reader said: "I'm taking photos to show to my son because the next one will be in 2034, and by that time he can also show these pics to his own son."
