With tolerance being an intrinsic value of the UAE's social fabric, Dubai is taking yet another step to promote it. The Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) in Dubai has announced that it will dedicate a day to highlight the importance of co-existence and call it 'UAE Day for Cultural Interaction Happiness'.
Though the date of the special day will be announced only next week, the authority said it will be an annual feature. People from different nationalities and backgrounds from across the world will meet up virtually through an online platform and share their experience and ideas about their cultural and religious beliefs. The annual event will also feature a number of public figures.
The authority said the day is inspired by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for Dubai to represent Islam in a moderate light.
Dr Hamad Al Sheikh Ahmed Al Shaibani, Director-General of the IACAD, said: "The initiative aims to build bridges between various communities in Dubai and the world. Through such initiatives, we want to deepen the concept of communication between different cultures.
"This initiative, we believe, will nourish minds and prepare future generations to be open-minded in terms of accepting others. These are essential factors we kept in mind to encourage tolerance and coexistence."
He stressed the fact that Dubai is considered the first global city to embrace more than 200 nationalities and a wide range of cultures.
Dr Omar Muhammad Al Khatib, Executive Director of the Islamic Affairs Sector, said the initiative will "create a common cooperative culture in the UAE society".
Adding that the initiative will "boost communication" between communities, Hind Mohammed Lootah, Director of the Mohammed bin Rashid Islamic Culture Centre, said: "Promoting respect and acceptance of others will help the future and present generations to feel the importance of tolerance and cultural diversity."
