A consultant working for a general insurance firm has been charged at a Dubai court after allegedly embezzling Dh1.1 million that was supposed to be handed as payouts to the company's clients.
The 33-year-old Asian woman reportedly stole a total of 43 cheques that were issued for insurance beneficiaries, the Court of First Instance heard. She was also accused of misappropriating Dh97,919 in funds that should have been deposited in the bank accounts of seven beneficiaries.
The defendant had been charged with embezzlement of public funds and breach of trust for the case registered at Al Muraqqabat police station.
During the public prosecution investigation, an auditing expert explained the financial discrepancies he found at the insurance firm's books. "My report covered the period from the beginning of 2017 up to May of the same year."
He told the prosecutor: "She disposed of cheques without the firm administration's knowledge or approval. Instead of paying 43 cheques to the companies' customers, she pocketed them. She embezzled cheques worth over Dh1.1 million."
Among the documents that the auditor evaluated was a mail, dated June 6, 2017, sent by a bank to the firm. It contained copies of 11 cheques that the consultant had reportedly received but failed to deliver to the insurance beneficiaries. The defendant allegedly encashed the cheques and pocketed the money.
A similar mail, dated June 12, 2017, contained 32 cheques which should have been delivered to the company's clients.
The trial has been adjourned to August 18.
